This is my first book by S.A. Cosby and he has a new fan for sure! I mean… WOW! First, his writing style is full of detailed descriptions, well-thought out metaphors, and vivid characterization that allows you to really see the story as it plays out. Second, his vocabulary and way with words was so powerful, as this is one of my most recent reads where I was also learning new vocabulary words while reading along. Third, this man’s mind is a force to reckoned with! The complexities of the plot and characters is top-tier. Throughout the story, each sibling’s journey was revealed that allowed the reader to develop a deeper understanding of the way in which their previous experiences impacted their current lives and personalities.

The secrets and revealing twists were absolutely shocking! I found myself heartbroken for Neveah, as she seemed to be the one left with the overall burden of her mother being gone and the responsibility to try to keep the family and herself together. Once she found out what really happened to her mom, her wild was shattered even more than she could imagine and her reality forever changed. Dante was also complex, in that his struggles with substance abuse were so real and close to home for many. But once you learn of the actual depth of his trauma, it becomes easier to understand why he felt compelled to live his life chronically under the influence of multiple substances. He’d also experienced so much trauma and was burdened by the secrets held between the Carreuthers men. Now to Roman… whew… he was a wild ride for sure. He began as a person who’s overcome some terrible tragedies and made it out of the depths of drugs, violence, and dysfunction. However, as the story progressed and he became more enmeshed with the street life, it became clear that Roman was more complex than initially seemed.

In all, this book was filled with of action-packed suspenseful twists and turns with complex characters and experiences. The nature of Cosby’s writing resulted in an emotional connection to the characters and their experiences that added to the powerful nature of this story. I’m excited to continue reading more from Cosby, especially if this book is a true indicator of his style of writing! I definitely recommended.
