Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

2.0

Honestly? This is a bad book. This is my third time reading it. I can say that.

It's like SJM got bored of the plot that she herself cooked up and instead sent her character on side missions to woo the prince and befriend a princess and raise a dog and do anything except spend time on the ridiculous competition. Don't get me wrong, I love good tournament arc, it's just that this book is not interested in being a good tournament arc.

Celaena is like a weird wish fulfillment Mary Sue-- badass, yet feminine, whipsmart and sarcastic, yet pure hearted. And completely unaffected by any of the many traumatic events she's faced in her backstory. Her backstory is kind of just there to tell us how cool this character is supposed to be, without doing any work to show us. And honestly? It's kind of fun to read a character that has next to zero baggage.

The banter is top-tier. I'm not saying the dialogue is great all the time, but the banter specifically is so dang fun and addicting to read.

The first 300 pages of this book was boring, but Sarah J Maas knows how to write an explosive (if shortlived) ending.

Anyways, can't wait for the real plot to develop in book 4.
