Though at times the characters seemed to articulate emotions far more clearly than your typical middle schooler (hell -- more clearly than your typical adult!), that didn't negatively impact the book's wonderfully general nature, or its really lovely story. A huge pleasure to read, particularly for someone who works with kids this age -- the optimism Stead brings to her story despite the cringe-worthy choices and disappointing inevitabilities is really gratifying, and is the sort of treatment "kids these days" don't often get from popular culture.
