Oh, my heart.
This book is tragic, raw, flooded with unconditional love, torn and disturbed souls who seek comfort in each other’s trauma.

The three siblings are fighting for their lives, struck by family’s fate, racism, and the demons the world sent out to them.

Viel crafted poetically beautiful depictions of the horrors of parentification, violence, and traumas too heavy for children’s souls.

At times, and especially towards the end, the narration got so crowded and thick that it was hard to clearly see through. But just as it was hard to distinguish the storylines for me, it was also fitting for the nightmare in which it was taking place.

And yup, I cried. Of course I did.

If you’re up for the challenge and don’t fear the gruesome darkness of abandonment, absent and violent parents, and the aftermath of an unsafe childhood presented in a horror novel, a slashing of emotional weight then you should definitely read this book
