TRANSCENDENT KINGDOM by YAA GYASI

Swipe to see Roxanne Gay’s summary of the book because I can’t say it any better than that.

Gifty, the narrator of this book, has lost her father and her brother and sometimes it feels like she’s lost her mother too. So she turns to science for answers. She feels let down by God, but her religion still plays a huge part in her lift. She is desperately trying to understand who she is and how she fits into the world around her.

This is a campus novel and a coming of age novel.

It is nothing like Homegoing, so remove that from your mind before you begin reading this because you might be disappointed otherwise. Homegoing was a sweeping masterpiece. This is a novel about the questions we try to answer about life and ourselves as we navigate this strange world. It is quiet and unassuming, but it is still a feat of literature and should still be celebrated.

I found this book unbearably sad at times and I couldn’t read it for extended periods of time because of Gyasi’s depiction of grief and depression. But it all became worth it and all the strands knitted together beautifully by the end.

Another Gyasi triumph.
