Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake
4.0

I liked Gormenghast a shade less than Titus Groan, simply because it is a little more conventional -- perhaps after the first installment it couldn't help appearing that way. Gormenghast continues the story, but it eventually settles into a fairly predictable good versus evil story. Which is not to say there aren't surprises. There are. (It's a bit disturbing how effortlessly good people meet their demise in his books.) And Steerpike is anything but a conventional villain, but the overarching frame of the story is nothing new. That aside, Mervyn Peake is a masterful stylist who seamlessly blends action and humor and tone. And I do hope that somewhere in the world there is a Dr. Prunesquallor Fan Club.
