Otherworld by Jason Segel, Kirsten Miller
2.0
I enjoyed the beginning of the book, the first 80 pages or so before the trek into Otherworld starts. It focuses on Simon's life, his relationship with his parents, and his relationship to the girl he will eventually go into Otherworld to save. After that it's all downhill. I didn't feel that the VR world was well developed. Maybe because I recently read Ready Player One and Warcross... the "game" aspect of this book just isn't on that level.
The main character, Simon, is extremely unlikable. He's really not smart and doesn't catch onto things quickly, even though his best friend says he's some kind of genius (um, no). He threatens to leak some girls nudes because they are bullying his best friend (okay, come on). He's short tempered, spiteful, and just frustrating.
The last third of the book is boring! Skim, skim, skim.
The story line was a little cliche for me. It's sort of damsel-in-distress like, even though Kat is supposed to be this badass tomboy or something. The things that were supposed to be surprises were revealed early and in the moment you're supposed to be surprised, you can't be because you already knew.
The ending was SO abrupt and just didn't tie up the first installment well. I know there will be a second book but I'm unlikely to read it. I'd give the first 1.5 stars... round to 2 stars to be generous...
