gquintana 's review for:
My Own Dear Brother
by Holly Muller
I received this book for free through the Goodreads giveaways program. This does not in any way affect my review.
My biggest problem with this book was the writing style. It was very choppy and juvenile, even when Ursula got older. It was very hard for me to read and just plain old rubbed me the wrong way. I couldn't stand it, and the plot was nowhere near strong enough to keep me interested enough to actually slog through it. I ended up skimming through the second half, just because I was interested enough to want to see if they made it at the end.
I didn't like or connect with any of the characters. The main point was to explore the effect of the war on women, children, and the disabled. Normally this exploration would keep me engaged, but between the poor style and annoying characters I couldn't wait to finish.
It was a relief to put this book this book down. This one might work for others, but it definitely didn't work for me.
This book is also available on my blog.
