Scar Tissue
by Anthony Kiedis
DID NOT FINISH: 37%
I had a hard time with this book. Pages 1-60 felt like one massive trauma dump. His dad is despicable, but AK narrates it as if the abuse and trauma was just an adventure. It’s sick to read about women in their late teens and twenties having sex with an 11 year old— a dad loaning his 18 year old girlfriend out to his son— but it’s glorified as something cool.
Pages 60-100 were much more interesting. It started detailing his experience in the band and finding his purpose. Some of the anecdotes were more engaging because it didnt have the monotony that most of the other sections did.
Pages 100-170 were one long laundry list of the drugs he did, naming off random ass characters for no reason, and talking about the LITERAL children he fucked or got into drugs.
After 170, I got fed up. I skipped through and read snippets until the end; it seemed like he was “in love” with some other poor girl each 20 pages or so.
I think his coverage of addiction could have been impactful if 80% of the book wasn’t just listing every dealer in LA at the time and how much money he spent for each score. I also really hate how he talks about women.
