Sharp Objects
by Gillian Flynn
Quote: “A town so suffocating and small, you tripped over people you hated every day. People who knew things about you. It's the kind of place that leaves a mark.”
Talk about complex characters with real, raw issues!!! I thrive off these kinds of things, and I loved the way Flynn created each character because they all had such complex emotions, pasts, and everything they did was always so intentional. She created a story that shows different kinds of women, instead of the fragile, gentle, genuinely kind females we are so used to. It seemed like almost every action had some sort of ulterior motive and there were very few genuine moments.
I knew I was picking up a psychological thriller (which are some of my favs), but this really forced me to think about the characters and the reason behind their actions. Fair warning, this book has all the triggers. They all had such tragic, difficult pasts that bled into who they became and influence them more now than I think they even understand themselves. It goes to show that the environment you grow up in has some say in who you turn out to be, and avoiding the tangled, scary and disturbing parts instead of confronting them can do more harm than good.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It is so dark, and so complex but SO good.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who likes deeply complex characters and unresolved pasts. If you liked Promise Not to Tell by Jennifer McMahon, you’ll probably like this.
