This sequel to the Conch Bearer is an adventure story filled with magical realism. Our hero, Anand, is struggling as a student in the Silver Valley.  He feels like he can't do anything right.  And then he has a vision that prompts his mentor Abhaydatta to go on a mission. Abhaydatta chooses a more experienced apprentice to accompany him, and Anand chafes at this.  Then he has another vision of Abhaydatta in trouble.  This spurs Anand to grab the conch and Nisha and runs off in the night to find Abhaydatta.  It ends up being a lovely story about finding your gifts and learning humility.
