you think you'd hear 'yeah, this one is about hal jordan who has been dead for a few years after being possessed by both the spirit of the embodiment of fear as well as the ghost of righteous servant of god himself as well as several other green lanterns each with their own personal histories and backstories, some of which go back decades' and think 'how can this possibly be a good place to start reading green lantern?'
and that was me. because... yeah, how do you read all that and expect this is something you'll enjoy while having next to no context for a character save for what i remember about john stewart from the justice league animated series. but rebirth (which kicks off the highly recommended and acclaimed geoff johns green lantern run) was right at the top of people's lists on a variety of different sources, so... i figured why not? most comics are written to just be picked up anyways!
impressively enough, i feel like i didn't miss a beat. of course i would've connected more were there a history i shared with these characters. no doubt if i'd known more hal jordan and experienced his sacrifice first hand, his return would've felt more triumphant. or maybe i would've understood more about kyle's journey across space and time, and his feelings about taking on the mantle of lantern in hal's absence.
in all honesty though, little of that impacted my enjoyment of this title. everything that you'd need to know, like what's going on with hal? who are the little blue men? what is parallax? who is spectre? it'll all be answered for you. and if you feel like it wasn't, there's a whole appendix in the back where geoff has taken the time to explain in pretty great detail more of the obvious questions.
overall, this was a pretty fun start! hal's return felt triumphant despite my lack of context, and i loved what i read between him and his father. i like kyle and john a lot as lantern's, and i really enjoyed the dynamic that green arrow (a hero i'm entirely unfamiliar with) got to share with all of the lanterns. my one real complaint might be the writing for batman? that felt off to me, but again, i'm missing the context of what hal did pre-his sacrifice when he was a vessel for parallex initially, so maybe bats is justified in his feelings idk. but yeah, this was a fun time, all capped off with the beginning, which maybe is one of the best single issues of a comic i've ever read? what a perfect little ending.
