Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

3.0

I really wanted to love this. I'd only heard great things. So, so much praise for the writing, the humour, the feminism, the romance. All things that I typically enjoy.

And while, yeah, this book arguably has all of those elements, I think the proportions were off.

It was really preachy feminism. It felt like watching the Barbie movie all over again. And Elizabeth was sometimes so outrageously stubborn and righteous that it couldn't even be considered cartoonishly comical- it was just straight up fucking annoying. Which is such a shame. I think if she'd been toned back a little, I would've loved her more.

It's also just a really dry read. There's a lot more chemistry involved than I thought, and a lot of pages just dedicated to Elizabeth's ridiculous shenanigans.

Ah! But I still can't deny that I sometimes laughed and sorrowed with her too. She still had some moments.

I don't know. I think I'm more rating the idea of the book, and less the execution.
