Light as a Feather by Zoe Aarsen
5.0
Plot Summary: Four girls decide to play the occult game "Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board" with the new girl, Violet. In the game one participant lies flat on the floor, and then the others space themselves around him or her, each placing one or two fingertips underneath the participant's limbs. The person closest to the head commonly begins by saying, "She's looking ill," which is repeated several times, and followed by, "she's looking worse," which is also repeated several times. The general direction of the call-and-repeat describes how the prone person is looking worse and worse, followed by saying "she is dying," and, finally, "she is dead". Theversion of the game end with the phrase "light as a feather, stiff as a board" chanted by the entire group, as they attempt to lift their companion's body using only their fingertips.
On Olivia's sweet sixteen sleepover birthday party, Violet, the mysterious new girl suggests to play the game Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board. Violet starts predicting the gruesome details of the girls' death except for one. That one person is our beloved protagonist McKenna Brady who has already escaped death once in her life. To unveil the secrets, the mystery and the past- join this roller coaster ride of Light as a Feather,Stiff as a Board.
Review : This is such a refreshing genre. The author is able to put all the elements of a horror, suspense and fantasy genre in this trilogy. I personally love these kinda books where the readers just forget to breathe for a minute. I loved it from the start till the end. And with just the right pinch of romance the author has made this book a must read. The first book of the series on Wattpad currently has 4.1M reads and 100k votes.
To be able to read a book, it is important that the readers are able to love the characters and specifically the protagonist. McKenna won't disappoint you. She is so different from all the MCs' out there. The book has twists and turns in the most unexpected way. In short the book will not allow you to sit on your bed stationary. At times you will want to throw your phone against a wall, or sometimes you would want to go inside the book and entangle all the mess yourselves for our beloved characters. You will sit right at the edge of the chair every time you open this book.
Let me warn you, this world can be scary in some occasions and let's just not forget the fact that the author herself used to burn sage while writing this book. Now, this fact gives you some ideas right?
The character Trey Emory will snatch your heart without you getting realized. And he will also leave it heart broken. The character development throughout the book is just what every author craves to write. It will be an emotional ride for all and believe me when I say ALL it means all. I just love how the author is able to mix so many genres in one and still make it such an amazing book.
The only con of this book is the ending. It is very emotional and heart breaking and that fact is okay with me. Just because it left me and the readers like me heartbroken does not give it a negative point. It would be personal if I do that. The real issue is the reason. The reason of 'losing my beloved character' is pretty vague. It does not seem right. The alternate ending which the author has written is far better than the original one and it just fits the puzzle perfectly. I even DM'ed the author suggesting her to look into the ending. And I sure hope the edited published version will be different. The second book is due to hit the shelf in Octobers.
The thing which I am trying to convey is THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ. It will engross you right from the blurb of the story. The book has been adapted by Hulu Originals for turning it to a web series. The first season and the first part of the second season is already up with some of the best actors and actresses like Brent Rivera,Peyton List,Liana Liberato, Dylan Sprayberry etc. However, I would highly suggest you all to read the book before checking out the web series.
