I wasn't prepared to love this book as much as I did! I fell in love with Jack and Mabel, an older couple who move to the wilderness of Alaska to start a new life. They are burdened with sadness from being unable to have children as well as distance in their marriage. I love how Ivey blends their emotions with the starkness of the landscape. I love the neighbors and the child they find in the snow. I love how they gradually fall in love with this land and with each other. So beautiful all around. The writing is spectacular in this novel. There are moments of magic and connection that took my breath away. I almost took off a star for a few things at the ending, but just couldn't do it after all. 5 stars.
