 UPDATED REVIEW!!!
a novel of infatuation vs long-term companionship, it gives a sad insight into how that which we desire can become that which we detest once we have obtained it. flaubert shows how we can ruin what sustains us in pursuit of what entices us. initially a book that i gave 0 stars without further consideration, but in the months which have passed has grown on me and been ever in the back of my mind.

OLD REVIEW:

took me almost 4 months to finish this book but i persevered out of spite.

Charles yearned for his wife to die so he could marry Emma, only for her to marry him and then begrudge him for loving her and being a simple man. She had multiple affairs, chose death by arsenic, and left him with no explanation or reconciliation besides the letters from her lovers and a mountain of debt. I really believe there were joys in life that she refused to let move her, really was the final boss of misery.
