The Grownup by Gillian Flynn
5.0
I'm beginning to think Gillian Flynn is a high function sociopath, and is using her intelligence to write books that I undoubtedly will fucking love, and think about until the end of time.
The MC is a thirty-year old lifelong con-artist who now occupies her days giving hand-jobs (oh yeah, Flynn jumps right into this to make you blush and grab your attention) and pretending to be a psychic. When i say hand-jobs, the author explains she does this like a full time job, 6 days a week, with return customers.
One day, a woman shows up for a reading, and after returning for an additional appointment, she invites the MC to her old Victorian home, to help her rid of any evil spirits she claims is causing her step-son to act psychotically. I'm going to stop right here, but let me say that you will change your mind of it's conclusion at least 3 times before the end of the story.
The best short story I've ever read - this should be made into a short film so that non-readers can see her work.
