How to Become a Planet by Nicole Melleby

3.0

Pluto's struggle her anxiety and overpowering depressive episodes is not easy to read. Her mom is trying everything to no avail and the book thoughtfully portrays Pluto’s relationship with her worried single mother. I liked the secondary characters (even though the love interest seemed more like an LGBTQ check than truly authentic) and how the novel is sprinkled with astronomy-related metaphors related to a planet’s properties. In the end, this book just made me feel sad and I think the author missed the mark by not providing resources or even an author's note.
