A Bound Heart by Laura Frantz
4.0

I know Laura Frantz is a great writer, so I never thought I'd have concerns until I read the synopsis: this is about a Scottish Lord and a young lass. The language and culture of the Scots are hard for me to grasp, so I was happy when Laura Frantz moved them across the Atlantic to British America and the Caribbean islands. As the story progressed, it was easier for me to get into it because it was becoming a little less about Scotland and more about the "New World."

Lark and Magnus are both two individuals who have been dealt hard hands. Lark is accused of murdering Magnus's wife. Magnus knows Lark better than most people. She's a good woman and isn't the sort of person to kill. But Lark is already condemned and bound for British America. Even when Magnus comes to her aid by showing up in court, he's unable to save her. To make things worse, Magnus himself gets extradited to the New World. They both want to stay together, but it's not possible. Both are indentured servants, unable to do anything. All they can do is wait.

Both undergo a personal journey of sorts in their separate ways. Lark grows as an individual. She knows more of what she wants. She loves being a mother, but she's not willing to settle for just any suitor who comes her way. Magnus is used to being a leader, but on this island plantation, he has to show the slaves that he's not like past managers. He has no intention of using violence unless his hand is forced. He'd rather earn respect and trust. He's willing to immerse himself in their language too better understand them, communicate with them, and treat them as they deserve to be treated.

The story is very long but worth the read. I look forward to more of Laura Frantz' work.
