The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen
2.5
dark tense slow-paced

The highs soar (unnerving setup, an excellent use of nothing being scarier than something, a unique for its time premise), the lows drag (clunky prose, a plodding middle, yearning for a few more details instead of "No! Egads! I cannot say! Horror! But I shall not speak of it! Terror and blasphemy! Yet I shall take it to my grave!")
