A round of applause for John Boswell. The scholarship here is excellent if unenviable; a fraught subject is handled with superb delicacy. This may be the most interesting book I have read all year.

I have too many thoughts for a longer review than this. I want to talk about this book, badly. Can’t wait to page through this again in a month or so and get even more out of it.
