Alliances by Timothy Zahn
2.0
I love Star Wars books and I love Timothy Zahn. The first book in this trilogy is outstanding. I bounced off the second one pretty hard when it came out and tried again. I made it through but it took awhile. Eventually went to audio so I could listen to it on walks and in the car.
The stakes just aren't that high for me in this. The book is split between two time periods.
In present time, Thrawn and Vader go to check out a disturbance in the force for the Emperor which takes them to an area where they had met years ago
In the past, Anakin Skywalker meets Thrawn as he searches for Padme along the Outer Rim after she'd gone after one of her handmaidens who disappeared.
Along the way they uncover a conspiracy for the separatists that is supposed to tie into Order 66.
The "in the past" timeline was not very exciting to me. The tie-in to Order 66 was interesting but the characters and action weren't engaging. I just kept wanting to go back to the present timeline.
There's a particularly interesting thread regarding the force abilities of Chiss children that's revealed but other than that, I was wanting to move onto a book with a different format of storytelling. I'm committed to finishing this series and hope the end of the trilogy is more like the first book than the second.
