Coolidge by Amity Shlaes

4.0

Very interesting book. Coolidge comes across as both a vigorous budget enforcer (with a point showing how this could be "stepping over a dollar to save a dime") and a person whose company was very enjoyable. The continuing theme of veteran "bonuses" and Coolidge's opposition to them provided, to me, the two sides of the government spending issue. Coolidge's (i.e. Mellon's) steadfast focus on budgeting, and the scientific taxation experiment are described very favorably. In all, this book describes a president who was very confident and disciplined in his job, and the country did well under his tenure. He also knew when he had enough, and that is also an admirable trait.
