I loved the mentions of Filipino culture in this book (betel nut, taho, etc.). Guanzon has created a rich world and memorable characters. I read that Guanzon used to write Star Wars fanfiction (Rey/Kylo Ren), so it was hard to not picture Adam Driver as Alaric. The relationship building between Alaric and Talasyn was good, but very slow. I hope there will be more between them in the next book. The worldbuilding in this book was a bit hard to get into at first, but it got easier towards the middle of the book when things settled down.
