I feel like I went into this book with too high expectations. I liked what the snippets on Instagram said: older MCs, slow-burn, lawful good MMC, etc. Unfortunately, I feel like the book didn't really deliver on these elements because they could have not existed and wouldn't have changed the story. Ava being 32 is basically pointless because not only does she often act impulsively and similar to any young FMC, she doesn't bring any of her life experience to her decision-making throughout the book, and the author didn't take it as an opportunity to turn one trope on its head (despite her being 32 and her mother dying of a long illness, she knows absolutely nothing about her history or powers. This would have been the perfect chance to make her knowledgeable if not actually skilled/powerful since her magic didn't work on Earth. Like she could have known her backstory at least and just needed to figure out how to become the savior everyone needs, not be starting from 0, without any explanation why her mother would put her in such danger but keeping her ignorant like that ).
The slow-burn wasn't really slow burn so much as just non-existent. They don't even meet until like 55% into the book. Then the MMC was pretty flat. I just didn't feel anything for them.
I'm not sure if someone else would be less picky than me, though, so I couldn't rate this too low because it was fine. The writing is solid enough, even if the characterization and plotting are weak.
