this is one of those books that kept falling to the very bottom of my tbr even though i had a gut feeling i would absolutely love it. and i did absolutely love it. i had started the audiobook early last year but wasn't a hug fan of the narrators so i ended up putting it down - after getting a little farther into it, there really was no better choice for amina's character.

speaking of amina's character, how incredible is she?! fierce, maternal, protective of her crew, takes-no-shit, i truly loved her right from the start. i want a prequel series of just her pre-retirement pirate shenanagins. so so badly.

i don't tend to analyze book plots super heavily, as i'm much more of a character-driven reader, but i have to point out i really loved this one!! the pacing was incredible, and there was a perfect amount magic and weird creatures. there were some good twists, and i really enjoyed falco as a villain, especially considering
he is someone amina could have very easily turned into if she gave into her ambitions.

this is one i'll absolutely be rereading, especially since i have to wait a YEAR for the next book and ANOTHER year for the third?! ms shannon please i beg you just give me a taste of the next ones i'll do anything
