Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer

adventurous dark emotional informative medium-paced

4.75

This was an incredibly well-written and heart-wrenching first person account of the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster by the author.  Once I got to the summit chapters, I quite literally could not stop listening.  Krakauer's attention to detail was well balanced with the appropriate disclaimers that his and others' memories of the incident are not entirely reliable given the high altitude at which they occurred.  His perspective of events provides an interesting commentary on why climbers choose to tackle such high-altitude peaks and the dangers of the commercialization of Everest to inexperienced and expert climbers alike.  I would rate this 5 stars, except that I know there is some criticism and controversy around Krakauer's portrayal of the events that should be addressed further.  I look forward to reading Anatoli Boukreev's counter to this work as well.
