Anthem by Ayn Rand

3.5/5

I finally read Ayn Rand! I feel like a proper adult.

This was a cool little novel, a clear allegory for the philosophical battle between individualism and collectivism, of which Rand's perspective is pretty clearly stated. I can see how this book influenced so many dystopian novels that followed it, and it was fun to pick out the connections to other similar works I've read. I do feel like the message Rand was trying to get across was pretty heavy handed at the end, an aspect that probably felt good to write, but ultimately probably wasn't needed. Altogether, I liked it and was able to read it in one sitting, but because it was a little more philosophical and political than I'm used to, it did impact my enjoyment somewhat.
