The Candymakers
by Wendy Mass
I was seriously doubting this story for the first few pages. Initially, I thought that the writing was weak but the story grabbed hold within the first chapter and from that point either the writing got better or the story took over so completely that it didn't matter. Possibly, both. The first section is probably the weakest of the five which is a shame because it sets the tone and some readers may not press past that to get to the meat of the story which unfolds in the next three sections. There were a few aspects of the story I didn't totally love but for the most part it worked. I can see this being a good book for people of many ages. Because I'm a sap I actually teared up at the end. Overall I was pleasantly surprised by this book and will look for other works by this author.
