On my TBR list a long time. I thought the story was good. In a way I can’t quite define, it felt a bit dated. I mean, yes, it was written in the early 1980s so Sagan tried to imagine what life would be like in 1999 and was not really successful. He didn’t imagine enough differences, the world was the same as 1985 just older. The Soviet Union was still an adversary, China was still underestimated, technology was the same only better. Ellie, as a woman scientist faced the same issues as always, but was not more sophisticated in her reactions and responses.
The physics was central and so much gobbledygook. Sagan spends far too much space explaining stuff. There are pages and pages of explanations that don’t make for compelling reading.
