Crying in H Mart

As with many of the books that I pick to read (or, in this case, listen to), my choices are determined by curiosity. I have heard so much about this memoir that, despite its gloomy synopsis, I wanted to experience for myself what everyone was talking about.
One thing for sure: this was a beautifully written memoir where every emotion, no matter how harrowing, was beautifully expressed. The synopsis written for this book was, for once, spot on: “… a story of family and food, grief and joy.”
It needs to be experienced to be believed but there is a caveat. For those of you out there who have lost a family member to cancer and/or have had a complicated relationship with a parent, this book will break your heart all over again.
Personally, I found it touching and eloquent in equal measure but found it hit a lot too close to home for comfort and ended up depressing me somewhat. Additionally, my lack of education in Korean cuisine and tastes left me slightly lost in places since I had no frame of reference…
However, despite my opinions (which are strictly personal), I still encourage anyone and everyone to read it for themselves.
