Love, Hate & Other Filters

This book was a major letdown for me. Being South-East Asian and a Muslim I expected a lot I could relate to. But nope, nada, nothing.
The book was simply an over-fluffed romance hiding under the theme of a progressive story, based on so many overused and outdated stereotypes about south Asian parents and families,l; there was little to no connection of Maya with her religion, like another reviewer,Ilsa, said, it was as if being a Muslim was simply a label for her.
If anyone is looking for an actual depiction of an Indian American Muslim’s life this is not it. It’s more a depiction of an Indian American family (and you’re better off reading [b: When Dimple met Rishi|28458598|When Dimple Met Rishi|Sandhya Menon|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1475687488s/28458598.jpg|48593860] if that’s what you’re after) with an immature daughter who constantly sees her parents and family as backwards and doesn’t take the time to understand and appreciate their struggles, story and reasons for their authoritarian ways.
Painfully one-sided. Lot of uncovered themes. Wasted potential. This might appeal to someone not Desi-Muslim as an introduction to a new culture (beware the inaccuracies though!), but other than the islamophobia sub-plot, as a South Asian Muslim, I found it woefully disappointing.
