mollydelahoya 's review for:
River God
by Wilbur Smith
I was peeved about how the characters (especially the main protagonist, Taita) were written until I finally relented; “Fine, these people are perfect, beautiful, brave geniuses. Why argue against it?”. I was then able to enjoy it as a fun, “light-hearted,” action-packed story.
At the end, Smith explains his inspiration:
During a visit to Egypt, he had the opportunity to read an ancient scroll written by a slave in honor of his Queen. In the writing, however, the slave finds a way to insert himself in much of the memoir, all while being self-inflating & braggadocious.
Clearly, the inspiration for Taita.
Now, that’s a funny & charming backstory. I wish it was included in the beginning rather than the end. It would have saved me a lot of eye rolls.
