Fangs
by Sarah Andersen
Book acquired from NetGalley, available as "read for free".
"eat him: pros / cons; date him: pros / cons"
Fangs is a short but funny graphic novel by Sarah Andersen, who is popular for her humorous comics about "adulting". Since I already knew some of her work (although not in a lot of depth), I was surprised to see that she had written something about a vampire and a werewolf. That just made me even more excited to read it.
I'm always on the prowl for some good vampire content and BOY was my thirst satiated with this one. wink wink. Bonus points for the deadpan humor and uses of typical stereotypes to build both the characters' personalities and to add to their own dialogue, it made me laugh out loud several times. In addition, I adore Sarah's art style and Elsie is so cute I might be in love. Aside from that, I now realize that I used to see many comics from Sarah centered on romantic relationships, and this was the perfect way to put a twist on it.
Elsie and Jimmy's story begins with them meeting at a bar, coincidentally after Elsie tells her friend that she is a… dog person. From there, we see snippets of their relationship, getting to know each other's tastes, going on little (usually nightly) dates, learning about each other's boundaries and past relationships – I mean, victims –, and so on. Each page is a new day or moment in their lives together, and it is filled with puns, pure image jokes, and classic werewolf/vampire humor.
I would (and have) highly recommend this book to anyone who likes mythical creatures and funny, metaphorical takes on what a relationship with someone who, as the synopsis says, "is perfectly suited for you but also vastly different" is like. Overall, the story was very light-hearted and of the feel-good type, perfect for those days you need to refresh your belief in love. Or just have a good laugh.
