The Houseguest: And Other Stories by Amparo Dávila

3.5

Wonderful if viewed simply from the perspective of magical realism, however lacks a lot of the horror that I was expecting going into it.
There isn’t much horror, despite its themes. The pace, the writing, the descriptions of characters and scenes, even the dialogue are very reminiscent of magical realism books, such as the works of Marquez. The horror of not knowing much is the driving force. What is real, what is imagination?
Perhaps my expectations didn’t allow me to enjoy these short stories to the fullest, but objectively speaking, they are well writing pieces of fiction.
