The Disconnected by Oğuz Atay
4.0
A man is emotionally devastated by the suicide of his best friend. It's the starting point for a quest to retrieve the motives of this friend. Through the book we are confronted with the world of men "without grip", men that don't succeed in coping with life. If we're honest, it's a struggle we all have to engage in.
Above everything this book is an experiment in writing in a modernist way; Atay rightfully is known as the Turkish Joyce. Especially the 60 pages long monologue by the girl friend of the dead person is a fabulous piece of art. This book deserves a better place in world literature. I've read this in the Dutch translation, I hope the English one is at least as good.
