When first published in 1899, this novel was considered ahead of its time and caused such controversy, that it ended Chopin’s writing career. After being banned several times, it remained out of print until the 1970s. Today, the book is considered a classic in feminist fiction.
This is a novel about femininity, patriarchy, soul, and spirit. We see Edna a wife and mother, who starts to question her role as a woman in Southern society. It’s with this question of gender roles, that Edna starts to answer them with unique strong female friendships, personal projects, and an affair (or two…) that shows her passion and desire.
I can understand how scandalous this must have been upon its original publication. Chopin explores feminism and the psychology of women at a time when those subjects were still taboo. I read this novel for my women in literature course at uni and while I recognize the amazing history of the novel, sadly this book just wasn’t for me. With that said, if you’re a fan of historical fiction then this is a must-read for you.
