Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn, David Levithan

5.0

You've Got Mail meets Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist with the Christmas holidays in NYC sprinkled in! If you like stories within this vein, you will love this one! This story has a playfulness to it that doesn't go beyond the age or scope of its protagonists life experience (16 year olds) but also has a depth to its analysis of relationships that can sneak up on you. Dash and Lily are constantly up to different hijinks, and the story never gets dull, but still somehow seems to be able to breathe. The way the storytelling shifts between each of the main characters compliments the story very well. Each character had the ability to convey certain situations in a better way than the other, and just like a real relationship, those different tones and vocabularies complimented each other really well. I've seen other reviews stating there are too many politics brought into the story and etc (You can tell who stopped after the first chapter) but I think the only times I felt what would be deemed as 'politics' was in the introductory stages for each character and just like any person it went enough to let you know who they are but then it was left there. Very well done storytelling.
