The Storm Runner by J.C. Cervantes
3.0
Not gonna lie, this one was a real slog for me in places.
Zane and I have very different ideas of what is a good question to ask at any particular moment, which usually means that when Zane asks a question, I am incredibly frustrated.
"Why would you ask that when the obvious thing to ask is this!" I growl.
"That has nothing to do with what you're doing, ask about this other thing instead!" I wail.
"PLEASE ASK ABOUT THIS OBVIOUS PLOT HOOK AND JUST GET ME SOME INFORMATION!" I plead.
It made for a aggravating read.
Also, at the end
"Ixtab went on to tell me how she'd been working undercover with my dad for weeks." Why would you reveal it that way? Why not just have Ixtab say that and show me? Do it in dialogue and it packs so much more punch. I almost missed this tidbit because it was revealed so offhandedly.
I did really like getting into the mythology, though, that was pretty cool.
There were two times that I really felt engaged with this book. One was the first time in the Empty and the other was in the Old World. I love the idea that there are ancient places that are abandoned and sleeping, and I love liminal spaces.
I love liminal spaces so much that I will probably read the second one just to see where Hurukan is, but for most of the book, I was thinking that I wouldn't read more of them.

a pretty big plot twist is revealed terribly. The book says,"Ixtab went on to tell me how she'd been working undercover with my dad for weeks." Why would you reveal it that way? Why not just have Ixtab say that and show me? Do it in dialogue and it packs so much more punch. I almost missed this tidbit because it was revealed so offhandedly.
