Listen to the Moon
by Rose Lerner
I think I'm getting tired of reading about lords and ladies, and it was a refreshing change to read about the working class in a historical context. Like the strictly "belowstairs" version of Downton Abbey. Also, I'm particularly getting tired of reading about assertive, dominant, alpha-male types, so finding a hero who likes to fuss over and take care of his object of affection is way more appealing! There was something particularly sweet about him taking the time to lovingly polish her leather boots. An ex-lover of mine did that for me once, so maybe I'm just biased. But I loved that detail.
I enjoy the author's writing and her mix of characterization and fun, sensual, earthy sex scenes. I also loved that the heroine was assertive and vocal about what she wanted and liked -- no shy, timid, meek little maiden here! The characters have flaws and hang-ups just like regular people, which make them seem more believable, and they have to work hard to get over the idiosyncrasies and emotional blocks that might keep them apart. I loved their banter, and liked seeing them settle into a comfortable groove together with their "marriage of convenience" that, surprise, surprise, turned out to be a happily ever after!
I'm happy I discovered this author and look forward to reading more from her!
