The Longest Day: June 6th, 1944 by Cornelius Ryan

5.0

This felt appropriate to read on the 80th anniversary of d-day.

This book meets my criteria for a five star read. It stands out in its genre and is a boon I will likely return to over and over. The Longest Day isn't a long book and it moves very efficiently through the set up of operation Overlord to very gripping first hand accounts of all the Allied front. It even gives particular details about the Canadian forces who don't often get mentioned in these histories.

The first hand perspective reads like the opening of Saving Private Ryan. It's graphic and hardly comprehensible but subject matter that I never want to get comfortable with.
