The Divine Comedy is truly a piece of ‘renaissance literature’ in that it attempts to encapsulate all disciplines of human thought (art, science, philosophy, religion, astronomy, music, politics, mathematics etc.) whilst also somehow managing to serve as a fictionalised autobiography, an emotional love story and a classically-inspired historical and religious epic that would take a lifetime to fully understand.
