The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton

4.25

Densely, spectacularly plotted, with some truly brilliant characterisation. I got 100 pages in and had to start over to get a better grip on things, and I’m so glad I did.

I’d love to reread this in the future—sometimes the complexity became overbearing, I’m still not sure I understand the cosmic framing, and the switch to short flashbacks at the very end felt a little jarring. But it’s still such a huge achievement.
