The Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny

dark mysterious sad tense medium-paced

5.0

In TV parlance, this book is a bottle episode, or perhaps more appropriately a locked room episode. Our two heroes, Jean Guy and Inspector Gamache are locked away from the world investigating a murder at a monastery. Over the course of the case they are forced to confront some fissures in their ongoing relationship, secrets, lies, leading to an ending that had my heart racing and aching at the same time.

The mystery itself is equally fascinating involving the history of music, of culture developed in isolation, what happens when humans live in seclusion and silence but are also responsible for great beauty. It is a deftly woven mystery that included some of the most beautifully rendered passages by author Louise Penny. I know people tend to read books as a series so hopping in at book eight might seem ludicrous, but if you wanted to start somewhere Book 8 and 9 in this series are fantastic.
