The Name of the Wind
by Patrick Rothfuss
I just finished The Name of the Wind and give it 5 stars. I enjoyed this story more than other fantasy series I've tried to read recently. (Dance of Dragons by George R.R. Martin and Robin Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice are 2 books I tried recently but just couldn't get through). Some fantasy series are better than others and this is one of them, in my opinion. It was initially hard for me to get used to the first person perspective it was written in but it worked in this book. I liked the way this book was written, as the main character, Kvothe (pronounced Quothe), is telling his story to a scribe who is chronicling Kvothe's life story. The Name of the Wind is the first day out of at least 3 days where Kvothe is relating his story, and it covers his childhood up to the age of 15. The story was very intriguing, the characters were well developed, and the plot had a good pace to it. There is young love, pain, poverty, and magic in this book. It was long (over 600 pgs) but I was able to read it pretty fast because the story held my interest throughout. The ending left me wanting more and was a bit of a cliff hanger - I look forward to reading the next one. Patrick Rothfuss is a very good story teller, and I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a unique fantasy novel.
