Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings by Christopher Moore
4.0
In my continuing quest to read Christopher Moore's entire oeuvre (perhaps without the vampire-themed ones ... we'll see), I just finished his 2002 novel, Fluke, an engaging, humorous and certainly Chris-Moore-ish book about whales and the researchers that love them. It's difficult to reveal much of the plot without spoilers, so suffice it to say it's an action adventure that is full of actual science, yet is fantastic in its scope and believability, filled with a cast of characters that you'd never find waiting for call-backs at Central Casting. Like I wrote, true Chris Moore.
There is so much more than the overall story line, though. Truly, this novel is more complex than many of Moore's other books I've read (save for Lamb, which was the perfect blend of humor, religion and history). But more importantly, there is definitely a message that suffuses this story: treat our sea life better than we have as all of nature is beautiful and wondrous. Jah, be praised.
It doesn't hurt that the book takes place in Hawaii, my spiritual home. Definitely a favorite of Chris Moore's books. Now I'm about to start Coyote Blue ...
