karrative 's review for:

Cecilia by K-Ming Chang
3.0

I gave this book 3 stars but that's mostly because it is short. At any longer length, this would have been lower. As many other readers I am simply disappointed by the complete lack of a story, this book truly is mostly vibes/a particular type of 'aesthetic' that is one focusing on what is considered 'ugly' or 'unworthy of mentioning'. THere is A LOT of bodily fluids descriptions, especially pee. THere is a lot of grotesque metaphors. So many mentions of crows and slugs. And I wish there was more about the obssessive/friendly/sexual relationship between Seven and Cecilia. I wish there was more about SEven's mum and grandma, embodying different types of femininity. It is so rare to  have a book this devoid of men, I wish it leaned into that more, giving us more in-depth characters. There is one quote from the book that I absolutely loved tho:

I didn't want to know anything about her life, what she did to live, where she slept, how many times a day she wiped her ass, the last time she cut her hair, whether she confused the words fray and flay. All those details would obscure her. All those detail would uproot what I knew of her, and I couldn't bear her as a stranger. p102

This quote to me is a perfectly put litmus test for love vs obsession. If factual details obscure a person to you, you are unlikely to love them.
