Ring Shout is about a young woman coming to terms with her past and her emotions. It is a story about intergenerational racial trauma, coming into your true power, and hope for the future.

I found the plot to be fast paced, gripping, and satisfying. The amount of gore was balanced with the humanization/monstrouization of characters, and the book for me become an action packed, women led, resistance narrative in a time I so craved one.

The writing was beautiful, and I will definitely be seeking out the author’s other works especially his shorter fiction because I appreciated how contained and deeply satisfying the narrative was. All in all, this is a piece with a lot to say and a piece with a lot of joy, which will be on my mind for a long while.
