Conspiracy of Blood and Smoke
by Anne Blankman
Our safe little worlds are always precariously perched on a precipice over hell. We hear rumors and we see violence, but it's not here so we will be okay as we push the ugliness away. When our world falls and plunges into the darkness and hell begins to ravage everything we held sacred; we scream, we claw, we try and cry out against the atrocities. We realize with a cruel clarity that hindsight is 20/20. Conspiracy of Blood and Smoke is this. WWII is looming. People are already disappearing. Riots are igniting. You know that no matter what Gretchen or Daniel do to try and stop that tour de force that is Hitler and his socialism that it won't be enough. Through the lies and the bodies used to cover up those lies, Gretchen and Daniel's unflinching idealism that Hilter can be stopped still gave me hope that they could do it, even know it was foolish of me dream that history could be changed. You read Conspiracy of Blood and Smoke because despite knowing the outcome, you want to know that people still fought against that roiling hate. You read this because Germany pre-WWII was teaming with life and strife. The people Daniel and Gretchen encounter will stick with you. You read this as a reminder not to let it happen again.
