The Search for WondLa by Tony DiTerlizzi

This is a great soft sci-fi adventure for kids (and interested adults), though the use of the story-world's jargon might make it confusing for younger ones. It follows a girl who has emerged from her underground home--where she lived with only her Muthr robot--to find the world above nothing like she expected. Her search for other humans takes her among all sorts of alien life and into danger. The illustrations are beautiful and a great help in visualizing the strange world and its creatures. Though it's a fairly thick book, it is easy, enjoyable and exciting.
